Steven Heller & Gail Anderson have co-authored numerous books on typography including American Type Play, New Ornamental Type, Type Tells Tales, and New Vintage Type. They will talk about their most recent publication Type Speaks [June 2021] and the proliferation of type design across all media from hand-drawn letterforms to generative machine-based designs.

This course will explore the ways in which new tools, technologies and techniques are impacting the rapidly expanding field of typographic practice. Students will create dynamic typographic systems using modularity, data visualization, code-based operations and machine learning, among other tools and techniques.

Computational Editorial Design address the shift from the crafting of design forms to designing systems. If the design process can be abstracted into algorithms, computational systems will be at the center of the graphic design process. As designers build their own computational systems with code, they have the freedom to remove or add certain conditioners and parameters. It seems illogical to separate editorial design from computation since a majority of design products are created, distributed, and interacted through computational media. Attendees will be introduced to the tools and steps necessary to build a generative editorial design system with computation.
